As the end of the year approaches, students are beginning to get really concerned with the seat time they have to make up. Students are now running around trying to find ways to make up their absences.
“Seat time is currently made up on Saturday mornings with a $5 charge per hour. Students will not fail if seat time is made up,” says Administrative Assistant Kathy Forbes.
There is an average of 7 absences per student and about 20 students are in jeopardy of failing because of their absences.
“Letters are being sent home or mailed to parents to notify them,” says Forbes.
There could be punishment for the people who don’t make up their seat time.
”If students owe seat time and do not make up the hours that they owe, teachers have the option of denying them credit in the course based on the fact that they did not attend the required number of hours in the course to earn the credit,” says Assistant Principle Trina Freeman.
Students who have too much seat time to make up could face summer school–or worse, not graduating!
“Most of our students that have missed too many days are not making an 80 in these courses. If needed, our underclassmen can spend time in June and/or July completing seat time. Seniors that do not complete all the seat time owed will not be able to graduate with their peers. They will have to complete the seat time in the summer and earn a diploma in August when the seat time requirement is filled,” says Freeman.
Students might not be in this situation if they could miss more than the state’s law of ten days.
“I think they should allow the 10 days, but make exceptions for people with real excuses,” says Sophomore Jasmine Rimmer.
Students who have missed fewer than 10 days just need to makeup the work when they return to school.
