Biology students recently tested real blood samples for sickle cell anemia. A bus from the Greenwood Genetics Lab came to Brashier Middle College and made it all possible. The students tested to see which blood samples have sickle cell and which don’t, the name of the lab that was ran was called a Gel Electrophoresis.
“This was an excellent way to get thousands of dollars of equipment in the hands of the students, and it was all free, which is crazy,” says Biology Teacher Bill Smith.
The Genetics bus or “Gene Machine” got a grant from the National Institution of Health (NIH) to have the equipment and bus to travel all around the United States impressing students with Genetics.
