Mr. Smith promoting American Cancer Society donations

Relay for Life is a good reason to let kids stay out past their bedtime.

Relay for Life is a 24-hour event that raises money for cancer research. Participants pick a spot on a track and try to encourage people to come and donate money to the American Cancer Society.

“Relay for Life is important to me because it has affected me personally,” said Brashier Middle College Biology Teacher Bill Smith. “I have lost a few people to cancer, like my friend in 5th grade. His name was Francis, and leukemia took his life.”

Something happened at Brashier that shocked a lot of people. Smith had a donation can, provided by Relay of Life, that was stolen. The can was said to have about $100 inside. In response, a few students went out and raised double the money that was stolen, raising over $200 in 2 days. Special thanks was given to juniors Hannah Kelley, Blake Jones, Aaron Talmage and sophomores Ben Voss and Dusty Hollahan.

“What happened made me lose a lot of trust in some students, but after the amount of money that was raised back up, I started to trust students,” said Smith. Junior Eli Cook warned, “Students should care about Relay for Life, American Cancer Society, March of Dimes and all others because 1 out of every 3 people you know will get cancer.”

The next Relay for Life event is May 15 at J.L. Mann High School. It will be a “Celebration of life!”
