Last year’s Varsity Girls’ basketball team was filled with anxious and more than determined ladies.  According to Coach Coen, the year went okay, but the whole atmosphere was almost too relaxed for a basketball team.  But, this year things are definitely about to change. The veterans of last years team were to have practiced all summer in preparation for taking on some of the toughest teams on the 1A level, which Brashier officially joined late last year. “I know we are facing really good teams this year so I really practiced hard this summer,” says Nubia Adams, a junior who played for the varsity team last year. So what is going to happen when rumors fly about only having nine slots for those fortunate enough to make the Varsity Team?

“Varsity Girl’s Basketball will be holding tryouts November 2 – 4 (Monday – Wednesday); we are looking to fill 9 spots,” Varsity Girl’s Coach Coen says regarding the rumors of slim numbers for this years team. “I think it just makes those trying out more serious and really want to do their best,” says Adams. There was also talk about there not being any chance of a Junior Varsity team, but Coen clears that up by saying, “If we get 20 plus girls to try out there is a better chance that we will have a JV girls team.”  For those really wanting to play but don’t feel they are ready for Varsity, you definantly still need to come to try outs because there maybe a better chance of having a JV team if there are more girls with a lot of heart willing to play showing up to try out.

Be warned, the season last year was tough but stands no comparison to how hard this season will be. Now that Brashier is officially a 1A school, there won’t be any more meets with church leagues; instead the teams will be going up against much bigger competitors. “This year’s team will be leaps and bounds different from last year’s team, based on attitude, commitment, work ethic, and desire.  I will take players that meet these criteria over pure talent; we will not have any distractions or poor sportsmanship this year. I am very excited for this season and I think we’ll be competitive in our new league,” says Coen.

The girls from last year have been working extremely hard all summer and are ready to welcome new players to the team as well as show what they learned over break at tryouts. Nubia says “I can’t wait to get some new girls on the team this year.” Those willing to bring what they have to the table need to be practicing and conditioning hard until tryouts and need to have a basketball glued to their hands practicing dribbling and shooting whenever possible.  Don’t wait until a week before tryouts to really crack down.  As Coen exclaims, “Excellence – doesn’t just happen… it is a decision you make every day.”

I hope that enough girls show up at the tryouts for there to be a junior varsity team. I am a freshman and not that great at basketball but would like to be on a team. I played on a middle school team last year but broke a finger and had to quit early. I hope that Brashier can be able to have a JV team in the near future.

Girl so glad to hear you want a JV team. I’m so excited about the up coming season and hope lots of girls try out. My only advice if you really want a JV team? Tell all your friends to come to try outs, even if they don’t make it, it will show how many girls want to play and there will be a way better chance for a JV team! Hope to see you at try outs!
