The guys soccer team has struggled from some setbacks that prevented them from being the best they can be.  Those setbacks were a result of some of the players that were missing from the team.  Those players are Freshman Ben Slagle, Junior Andres Largacha, and Senior Sabien Clark.

“I would say that I am very glad to be back on the field, and [by]being back I get to play teams we lost to when I was absent,” says Slagle.  Slagle was out because he had a virus that made him sick for 4 days.

Andres was off of the team because he had some bad grades.  “Yes [it's fair for Andres to come back] because he pulled them [his grades] up,” said Sophomores Zach Singleton and Kyle Stevens.

“Both (Slagle and Andres) are good players, and we already have a small roster so losing those two guys really hurt us because they are good players,” says Guys Soccer Coach Mark Roberts.  “The team had to work harder to fill their [Slagle and Andres] positions,” says Stevens.

Senior Sabien Clark suffered injuries during a game earlier in the season which kept him off of the team.  “I can’t play the rest of the season,” says Clark.  Clark also says, “I am on the team. I am the captain of the team.”  Roberts thinks that Clark is a good player and that he is dedicated and fearless.   “We have to learn to play better defense because he [Sabien] was out main defender,” says Singleton.

The team has had about 6 games in the last two weeks.  Roberts tried to balance rest with work to prepare them for all these games.  Roberts thinks the team needed to rest because of all the games, but they needed to improve with practice.  Stevens says, “[the practices are] rigorous training.”  While Singleton says, “[they are] improving us as the year goes on.”

During the season the team has gotten to play its sister Greenville Tech schools.  This is the first year all three of the Greenville Tech schools have had a team.   “I thing it’s exciting to play our sister schools, and I really want to beat them,” says Roberts.  Roberts thinks the harder of the two other Greenville Tech teams to beat will be the main campus because they have had a soccer program longer than the Greer campus.
