Morgan Clark, Ray Adcock, and Lydia Wallwork look over the schedule for the Greenville Literacy

During of the month of November, Beta Club members decided it was important to start touching the lives of children. Four days a week different Beta Club members volunteered at the Greenville Literacy Association to tutor children. The Greenville Literacy Association is the largest community -based adult literacy program in South Carolina. Adults come to improve their reading, writing, math, computer, or English speaking skills. The Greenville Literacy also provides a place for children to come and do their homework while their parents take classes.

The Beta Club helped the kids with homework and helped them study for tests. Beta Club Vice President Morgan Clark came up with the idea about the volunteering there. “My mom’s friend is an administrator there so I started volunteering there and then brought the idea up to the rest of the Beta Club.”

It wasn’t all work though. Once the kids were done with their school work Beta members were encouraged to play games with the children. Beta member Ray Adcock stated, “I enjoyed just hanging out and having fun with the kids.” Many members had a lot of good memories to share. Wade Cooper said, “The funniest memory I have is the time I played Uno with these three girls and they kept cheating to make me lose because I was a boy. It was so funny because they were very obvious about it.” Adcock added, “My favorite part was when the kids had all their homework done and we got to build with blocks.”

This opportunity was different from most of the volunteer opportunities. While the goal of this experience was to impact the lives of the children, the Beta Club members were also touched through this opportunity. “I didn’t expect it to be so much fun. It made me realize I shouldn’t judge things and people before I give them a chance” Adcock said. Clark stated, “It’s very rewarding to have the ability to help kids. Hearing the children and parents say thank you for my help really touched me. It was good for us to get out in the community and get involved in the lives of children.” The Beta Club is planning on volunteering in months to come. Cooper stated, “I really want to go back. I had a lot of fun. The kids we’re really crazy and they made me laugh.” Adcock stated, “Of course, I want to go back. I had a lot of fun.”
