Going about a normal day, whether it’s playing a game with your friends, calling your brother, or shopping for groceries, you never think that the impossible will happen. On January 12, it did. A 7.0 Earthquake struck the island of Haiti, 10 miles from Port-Au-Prince. It lasted only 30 seconds, but it was long enough to kill/injure 200,000 people. Thousands of structures were damaged, leaving many without food, water and the necessities needed to survive. “I can’t imagine what they went through. It’s almost unreal,” said Sophomore John Dam.

Brashier Math Teacher Lisa Ann  Wheeler has family down in Haiti right now. “My sister in-law ran out side to see what was happening. She felt as if the sky was going to fall down on them, and the ground was going to open up and swallow them whole,” said Algebra 2 teacher Mrs. Wheeler, ” Inside the church were they were at, was a beautiful haitian girl named Luzanie. She died that day, and my brother in- law spent 2 days searching for her body, so that he could bring her home.”

Looting is now a major problem in Haiti. People  are desperate for essential needs to survive. There are armed robbers breaking into orphanages looking for food, because they think since it is an orphanage, they would have food and water. Thousands are hurt and dead, and the bodies line the streets of Port- Au- Prince in rows. It’s a nightmare that they just can’t escape if they tried.

Help did come in the days following the Earthquake. A red cross boat arrived in Haiti. This boat is basically a floating hostpital, that has already helped many hatians with life threating injuries. Doctors in Haiti are allowed to help, as long as they have documentation that qualifies them to.

“It’s unfortunate what happed to them. They just got over a horrible hurricane season, and now they get an Earthquake with over 40 aftershocks, ” said Sophomore Stefanie Voss.

With all the tragedy that has taken place there, people are still singing, celebrationg, and dancing through the streets, thankful to be alive.

They still need help, and you can be apart of that. The Beta club has set up a fundraiser for your advisories. You can bring in things that the Haitians will need like :

  • toothpaste
  • soap
  • waterbottles
  • medical supplies
  • blanckets
  • etc.

Also please check with your local Red Cross, to see what you can do to help.

One of the biggest ways we can help Haiti is through prayer! Though this was a terrible trajedy, it has opened the door for so many missionaries to come in and spread Christ’s love to all! Maybe this disaster can be used to bring a revival to Haiti! Keep praying! God bless!
