Erin Slater works on her art project during class

This year BMC is offering a class that allows students to let their creativity soar. David Kessinger teaches two art classes.  So far students have been working on foundation works on design and line personality and composition. Kessinger said, “It’s really important for these projects to be student choice, that way it enhances the creative process.” Another part of the class is artifact journals. These allow students to express their views on the world through writing. “It forces someone to truly look at the world and how they can deal with life,” Kessinger said.

Kessinger enjoys teaching art because he believes it helps students to see what’s really important in the world, and he enjoys teaching the students. “It allows me to help kids express themselves. I put the students in the center of their work. Their creative genius is behind their work.  I just helped them get there.”

Students enjoy the class as well. It gives them the freedom to express themselves. Junior, Erin Slater stated, “I took the class because I love art, and it’s a really relaxing class to have in the middle of the day.” Marissa Cox said, “It doesn’t feel like a class, we listen to music and get to have fun doing art with our friends.” Kessinger encourages all students to sign up for art. “Art is a necessary component for all of education. We have fun in class, we learn but we have fun doing it.”
