Tylar Barns expressing her personal style

Are uniforms a blessing or a curse? You decide. Many students say that they don’t like the idea of wearing the same thing everyday. “I can’t express myself the way I want,” says Sophomore Sam Storie, “I can’t wear my blue jeans and tee shirts, and can’t show who I am. Were all covered in black and khaki, and it’s like were all prisoners wearing the same thing every day.”
Other students are ok with the dress code. “I don’t mind them. I could never wear a plaid skirt,” said Stephanie Voss. “You can match anything with black. Greenville Technical Charter High School has to wear navy blue polos. What can you match with that, other than white and grey? It’s very limited.”
There are many ways students can add their personal style to their clothes, but some don’t feel that way. ”I guess the only thing you can do is get a colorful undershirt, a belt and shoes. There is not much you can do with the uniforms.”
I know that there are limitations to what you can wear with your uniforms, but I noticed that you can find ways around them without breaking all the rules. If you look at several stores such as Aeropostal, JC Penny, Khols, etc, there are a various group of polo shirts, jackets, and sweaters. Have you ever noticed that polo prices drop during the middle of the summer? It’s because girls will be wearing shorts, tank tops, and sundresses, and guys will lean towards tee shirts, shorts, and white tees. That’s the best time to go and buy the polos before the prices rise again.
There are different cuts to a lot of polo shirts, and you can take them home and sew on some colorful buttons and hem lines, or make your shirts if you can do them. I would personally do that to my uniform, but I have a problem keeping the machine sewing in a straight line.
One thing you can always change is your hairstyle. You can cut it, curl it, braid it, etc. You can always do something that is similar to what you always do, and let it be your signature look. I say you should change it up every now and then to keep people always guessing. I know a lot of girls want to try something new and dye their hair. Just do that on a long holiday in case you find out you don’t like it. Then you can go back and fix it before you go back to school.
My favorite part of my uniform is adding accessories like necklaces, rings, bracelets, shoes, belts, headbands etc. Now you really don’t have to go around and wear heels that tear up your feet. If your looking for a pair of heels for your uniform and you see a pair that are really cute, and can tell that you will only last 2 hours in them, don’t buy them, especially if you have to travel up and down the hill for college classes.
There are plenty of belts, tee shirts, and shoes you can go all out on. There are belts that shine, belts that have studs, you can even go out and get a white belt, grab sharpie, and design it the way you want. Even though you have to dress a certain way when you walk through those doors, there is always a way for you to express your personal style.

I like the white belt+black Sharpie idea. It’s really creative and I hope we get to add some colors next year. You could also get a Letterman and personalize it however you want.
