Army of Green

Eight students were selected to be student ambassadors for the Middle College National Consortium. MCNC is an organization where middle colleges around the world come together and share their ideas or projects for the selected theme. The theme of this year was “Going Green.”  Each school had to come up with a plan to spread awareness and get others involved in helping the environment. BMC’s group came up with the idea “Army of Green.” They went all out to spread environmental awareness for the community. They learned army drills and facts about how they can help their environment. Their idea and way of spreading environmential awareness is a One Minute Video Contest. The One Minute Video Contest will start in the beginning of the next school year and will involve students making videos about their work with the environment. BMC made a video of the directions and the rules of the contest and will send it to every high school in South Carolina. “I really enjoyed making the instructions on a video, it will get students involved more” said Relina Byrd. The group or school with the best video will receive prizes given to the Army of Green by sponsors. Already, BMC’s abassadors have been contacted by Duke Energy, Sports Authority, and many more who are interested in the project.

This year, MCNC was in Denver, Colorado. The first day they stayed in the city of Denver. While in Denver, they went to the host ambassador’s school to get something to eat and to attend the Green Fair. “The Green Fair gave us a lot of interesting information on the different ways we can go green,” said Paul Symthe. The Army of Green also had the opportunity of leading a march to the Mile High Stadium, where they ate dinner.  “I was so nervous leading the entire MCNC organization, because all eyes were on me,” said Shamund Peters. The ambassadors also visited the Denver Zoo, Denver Museum, and the EPA building. On Thursday through Sunday, they stayed in Estes Park, where they went hiking, rock climbing, snow shoeing, and climbing a Low/High ropes course. “Hiking with Crazy Mike was fun,” said Paul Symthe. Geoff Getty and Sandy Brigmon were the leaders of the Army of Green. The students included juniors: Haley Canady, Jessica Forbes, John Eron, Alex “Bobby” Thomason, and Shamund Peters. “When I arrived at the hotel, I receive a name tag with Bobby Thomason on it, and they didn’t know my real name was Alexander,” said Alex Thomason. The sophomores of the group were Brooke Ingram, Relina Byrd, and Paul Smythe.

Next year BMCCHS, along with Greenville Technical Charter and Greer Middle College, are going to be the hosts for MCNC in Greenville, South Carolina.
