On Saturday March 14th, Sandy Brigmon and I were invited to speak to the AsociaciónHispano-Americana de Mujeres. “Mrs. Sandra Yudice, this years President of AHAM invited me to speak,” said Brigmon. AHAM is an association that offers scholarships to the Hispanic community in the Upstate of South Carolina. Yudice knew about Brashier Middle College Charter High School, but she wanted her association to know about charter schools so that students from BMC would also be included in the scholarship program. At the same time, the visit informed our school about AHAM. “Before the invite, I honestly didn’t know their association existed,” said Brigmon.
As we arrived to the Marriott Hotel my expectations were different. I knew that I would be with a Hispanic association, but I thought that they would be speaking in English. I had to speak, and I was a little nervous. We soon realized, however, that the meeting was all being spoken in Spanish, which made me feel less nervous. Brigmon spoke in English of course. As we presented BMC to the association we could see their excitement about charter schools. It was a great experience being able to speak about BMC and being able to answer any question that we could. We found out that AHAM does many events that need volunteers and mentioned that BMC students could be able to participate. AHAM events raise money for more scholarships. The association has given 58 students a total amount of $88,300.
“Personally I’m very much impressed with the commitment from the teachers and staff and the opportunity that the students have to take college classes while in high school,” said Mrs. Yudice. The meeting ended with great joy. Mrs. Yudice and Vice-President Lucila Foster presented Mrs. Brigmon and I with a gift from the entire association. We were very honored in receiving the gift and very proud to say that BMC is one big family. “I’m sure that they will spread the word in the community about the school,” added Mrs. Yudice about the association.
