Craig Martin talks to his class

Mr. Martin’s leadership class is still planning on adopting a school in response to a video on school conditions along the I-95 corridor that the students viewed back in early September. Many students are wondering if the school is still going through with the arrangement. Craig Martin says, “We are still in the process of discussing the issues and figuring out which school we are going to give assistance to.”

The school that will be chosen will be a charter school. It will be a sister school for Brashier to support because charter schools receive less funding then regular public schools, which makes it even worse for those located in the Corridor of Shame. Martin says, “I went to the Palmetto Charter Conference and was put in contact will people who represent the schools in that district so that we can figure out which school would be the best candidate for our support. In other words, who needs the most help.”

Many students are concerned about the level of enthusiasm and the fact that it has veen such a long time since this topic has been discussed. “I am sad that it has taken us so long to try to help these schools. They really need help but they will be glad that we are helping,” says Sophomore Christian Navarre. Martin is assured that the level of enthusiasm will increase once the project is in effect. He feels that the enthusiasm will grow once a school is chosen and the school begins supporting and providing for the underprivileged school.

“They are lacking the necessary teaching and school supplies and the facilities are not up to par,” says Martin. “We will be setting up fundraisers, organizing book drives, and setting up school supply drives in order to help them get some of the basics that they need.” These are just some of the plans that the leadership class has for helping the students in these schools. Plans will move forward once a school is chosen by Martin in correspondence with the representatives of the schools in need of assistance. Martin says, “Our board is behind us, one hundred percent. They have made it clear that they are behind us all the way.”
