Many of Brashier’s faculty members are working to get approval to become a 1A school, but, if approved, what will this mean for the teams? Instead of churches and smaller schools, BMC will be playing larger and better known schools such as Southside Christian and Greenville Tech , to list a few. “I am so excited; I can’t wait to compete against other public schools with better athletes,” says Varsity Boys Coach Cavin. Alongside basketball, if approved, all sports teams including soccer, baseball, volleyball, and golf are also eligible to compete against other schools in the 1A league. Coach Coen, the Girls Varsity coach is also excited about the change. ” You know, I think it’s great, I think it establishes us more as a public school.”

But does Brashier stand a chance against much larger schools? More competitors are coming BMC’s way, and they don’t know what to expect from Brashier. “In the past we have had good competition… We have had pretty stiff competitors, which should give us a feel of what’s to come next year,” says Coach Cavin. However, Coach Coen feels, “It’s going to be a cruel awakening because that high school league is a different kind of team altogether.”

To get ready for next season, basketball conditioning hits the ground running early in the school year. Next year, the coaches both agree more work will be needed to conquer bigger teams in the following school year. ” Students need to be aware of what they are signing up for, the mentality must change, the dedication to the team must also heighten,” Coach Coen says.

How do the student athletes feel? Sophomore Nubia Adams says,” I’m ready mentally, and I know if our team can be physically ready we could be wonderful.” Both students and coaches are ready for 1A ,”I think we could of joined this year actually, I know we’re ready,” Coach Cavin says. Coach Coen is anticipating the change with excitement as he says, “It’s time to step it up a notch.”
