Don’t read this if you don’t want to know what happens in the story.
Usually, I normally love Tim Burton’s movies, and his latest Alice in Wonderland, lived up to my expectations. The acting was good, and the special effects were amazing.
Now this story takes place after Alice, played by Mia Wasikowska and Mairi Ella Challen, visits Wonderland in the original movie. So, if you haven’t seen that one, don’t go to see the “remake.” The basic plot is that in the beginning Alice is about 7 and has the same nightmare every night. When she tells her father, he replies with, “You’re completely bonkers, but between us, some of the best people are.” This quote will have some significance later. Around 10 years later, Alice is still having that same nightmare, and her mother decides to drag her to a “party”. Alice’s character is rebellious, head-strong, much like a typical teenager now. Alice runs away from the party, supposedly chasing a white rabbit in a coat, and ends up falling down a hole. Now the rest of the story takes off from there.
Alice is referred to as “The Alice” by everyone in Wonderland. Apparently, she has been there before but does not remember a thing about the characters. The other characters in Wonderland keep on talking about a prophecy, that says Alice will slay the Jabberwocky, and bring peace and power back to the whimsical White Queen.
One of the first characters that we meet is the Mad Hatter played by Johnny Depp. I honestly didn’t like him that much. His acting was good, and I didn’t have any problems with that. It was just that it was too similar to his acting as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean and Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was just him flip flopping between these 2. I personally would have preferred Jim Carrey, but hey thats just my perfrerence.
One of the other main characters that we meet is the Cheshire Cat,voiced by Stephen Fry. Now he was my favorite. I could watch him roll around and disappear and reappear all day. He was just that interesting to me. I love the way he was designed animated. And, the voice was just the icing on the cake.
The last character that I want to talk about is the Red Queen. The way she looks now is how she should have been portrayed in first movie. Her body is very small, she has a heart shaped head, the way she is portrayed makes her interesting. This is such a step up from the original version of a big weird looking woman.
Overall, this movie was a great story on a girl becoming a strong, independent, and headstrong young woman. I would recommend this for kids of all ages and adults too. I can honestly say that this movie was a great addition to Tim Burton’s award winning movies, one that gets “curiouser and curiouser.”
