Easter, the traditional Christian holiday, today is filled with eggs and candy.

On Easter Sunday many students get up to and go to church, but Brashier Middle College Charter High Junior Sabian Clark said, “We get up early, eat a big meal, and look for baskets full of candy. BMCCHS Freshman Shelby White said, “I go to my grandparents house to hide Easter Eggs for the little kids, then I help them find the eggs.”

Some students think of the religious side of Easter when they think about where Easter actually comes from. White says Easter started when “Jesus rose again on the third day.” However BMCCHS Sophomore Kali Llamo says Easter started with “a bunny.”

Easter has a commercial side. White says, “It gets the parents to buy candy to make their children think that the Easter Bunny is real.”

Whether or not the Easter Bunny exists, Easter candy is popular with Brashier students. Out of one hundred BMCCHS students polled, the top Easter candy was the Reese Eggs with 47% voting for it. Coming in second are the Chocolate Bunnies at 19%. Third are Peeps at 15%. Forth are Starburst Jelly Beans at 8%. Fifth are Cadbury Eggs at 7%. Sixth are the Hershey Chocolate Eggs at 5%. Seventh are the regular Jelly Beans at 4%. Finally, eighth are the Gum Eggs at 1%.

The Easter Bunny is a huge Easter icon, but where did it come from? Llano says Easter bunnies come from “the mamma bunny.” Llano’s statement is not far from the truth. The Easter Bunny has its origin in pre- Christian fertility lore. The hare and the rabbit were the most fertile animals known, and they served as symbols of the new life during spring season.

Another Easter tradition is Easter Eggs. The egg is also a symbol of fertility and new life. The customs and traditions of using Easter eggs have been associated with Easter for centuries.
