Students walk out of the gym after a long, hard period of Physical Education. Sweat is dripping down from their forehead, down their faces, and on to the floor. They laugh as they take a sip of their cold drink, knowing that this same thing will happen the next day. Will this fun continue for the next three years of high school?

High school students have always been required to take P.E. for their first year. However, once your freshman year is over, P.E. is no longer required. Should it be?

Athletic Director Beau Bibb finds it extremely important for students to take P.E. “Childhood obesity is about triple what it used to be ten to twenty years ago and with that increasing we need to increase our physical activity and P.E. teaches kids how to get active and how to do different skills and play games and things like that. In the end it’s very important for kids to get active and get that knowledge of how to play sports and be active”, says Bibb.

Even though most students do not understand how much P.E. can really help them, they do seem to enjoy the class the one year they get to take it. “It’s fun and we get to be active. It helps build our endurancec and get our physical activity up”, says freshman Monica Cleland. “I can get my jitters out”, Cleland adds.

P.E. is not like every other class. It rarely, if at all, requires any homework. The only class work is running and learning how to play different sports. “It was different then other classes and you can actually run around and do stuff”, says junior Sarah Theisen. Theisen enjoyed P.E. when she was taking the class, but does not think it should be required after 9th grade. “Other classes are more important for college”, Theisen adds.

Bibb believes P.E. should be required all four years of high school. “Kids need to get active, with going to school for eight hours and going home and studying for two or three hours, unless you play a sport it take the activity level out of kids. A lot of kids don’t go home and just decide to go out and shoot basketball. Hopefully they will, but most kids don’t. Those four years of really integrating that activity kind of grates it in their minds to keep being active”, says Bibb.

I think that they should eliminate health and just focus on PE. We have allready had health for 2-3 years! >.<

I think that we should have PE for at least the first three years of high school. It gives me a chance to forget about the missed homework assignment, or the test that I flunked. I love it!

I think you should be able to take PE every year because its the only time in school you actually get to do something besides writing.

I know. I want to fail this years P/E so i can take it again next year. P/E is the best thing in the day. I have all of my hard subjects and then their is P/E.We need to have it all of our years because the students wont get enough physical excersize during the day because of not having P/E. Just sayin…..

You wish we could focus on more PE instead of health because you have had it so many times, but the reality is no one knows it still….

I think students should take more PE. I know some students who arn’t very athletic have a hard time, but it’s good for morale. Even if it’s not a large amount of excersise, it will help you feel better about yourself. You’re body will feel better, and you’ll sleep better too. Plus you can let out some unwanted energy so it’s easier to focus in class. I’m a sophmore and I don’t have to take P.E, but I do. Plus I play sports, so I usually feel better by the end of the day. PE helps me stay in shape for my sports. :)
