Senior Project
May 21, 2009 • written by Bailey Patterson
The first senior year in Brashier Middle College’s history is coming up fast, and with it comes the first round of senior projects. Even though students at Brashier have known about senior project for quite some time, there are many that are still clueless about the details. There is a committee that was assembled in 2008 and consisted of one teacher from each subject. Mrs. Yon, English III; Mr. Kabel, Resource; Mr. Smith Biology; Mrs. Robinson, Business Finance; Ms. Abercrombie, English II; Ms. McCammon Guidance, Mrs. Wheeler, Geometry and PreCal. “The responsibility of the committee is to guide students in the beginnings of their senior project,” said Bill Smith, Biology teacher and member of the project committee. “We will also write a handbook that guides students in learning about senior project and with the senior project.”
There are four aspects of the senior project; a class, final project, portfolio, and a presentation. In the fall, seniors will turn in an application with an overview of what they would like to do, how they will do it, the funds that will be necessary, and most importantly what will be learned during the project. After the application is turned in and the idea is approved, the first couple weeks of the senior project class will be devoted to researching how to carry out the project idea. There will also be a research journal and a reflective essay due throughout the year. In the spring of the senior year there will be a total of one hundred judges that will come in. Each project will be assigned three judges that have some expertise in the student’s project area (ex. If a project is building a house then the panel might consist of architects and contractors).
The committee will be producing a few handouts and information sheets on the basic information concerning the senior project and the details around it.
On May 18, 2009, three recently graduated students from Greenville Tech Charter High School came to Brashier and shared their experiences with senior project in some of the junior 6th periods. The students described hurdles that they had to jump and the rewarding feeling they got from accomplishing something major in their senior year.
Some lowerclassmen at Brashier are already starting to think about the seemingly daunting task ahead. “I think that senior project will be fun but I am kind of scared of it,” said Zach Singleton freshman at Brashier. Regardless of the stance taken on senior project, it is a necessary part to transition out of Brashier and into future careers.
