Relay for Life

This year Brashier students participated in an event that raised money for the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life was held Friday, May 15 at J.L. Mann High School. In total it raised $300,000 dollars for the on- going, usually expensive research towards finding the cure for cancer.
“The way they organized Relay for Life was very powerful,” says Lauren Kreutziger, a junior who attended the Relay. The night of Relay, people walk a track taking different shifts all night long. There are games, music, and the atmosphere is filled with joy and love.
At the Greenville event, there was a tent where individuals could choose to donate their hair to make wigs for those going through Chemo Therapy. They tied back their hair with elastic bands and cut it. Each person gave at least ten inches.
During the night, once the sky got pitch black, little white paper bags with the names of lost loved ones written on it and special notes or drawings, were illuminated with little candles placed inside the bag. Each bag was placed side by side along the track in remembrance of those lost to cancer. “The Luminaria Service is really cool, they’re all around the track,” says Jade Gonzalez, a sophomore who has in the past attended Relay for Life.
Through the whole night, people walked the track. Relay for Life will continue each year until one day, the cure for cancer is found. “It was really cool to see so many people gathered for the same purpose,” says Junior Haley Cannady. So next year, check out Relay for Life and be a part of a great cause.
