On March 26, the Brashier Middle College Charter High School students of Environmental Studies, Tech Club, and the STARS Club took a field trip to Duke’s Oconee Nuclear Power Plant.

The Oconee Nuclear Station is located on Lake Keowee in South Carolina. Oconee Nuclear Station was the first of three nuclear stations designed, built and operated by Duke Energy. Today, Duke Energy’s nuclear fleet provides electricity to approximately half of its customers in the Carolinas.

The students went on a tour call “The Story of Energy.” The tour was about recycling, the plant itself, and background infomation on the plant.

After the tour, the students sat down and listened to a presentation about Duke’s Oconee Power Plant.

The students learned how the plant converts nuclear power to electrical energy and supplies the energy to homes.

BMC Junior Olivia Forrester said, “My favorite part of the trip was learning about the hydroelectricity because the presentation supplied so much information on the subject.”
