On October 26, Brashier Middle College added to its’ list of firsts. Seventeen seniors were inducted into the inaugural chapter of the BMC National Honor Society. At 6:00 p.m. the ceremony began with prayer by Reverend Jerry Hill and the Pledge of Allegiance led by inductee Weston Cavett.  Principal Mike Sinclair and Chapter advisor Craig Martin welcomed the inductees and their families and told of what it takes to be in the National Honors Society. Martin said, “This is an organization formed to promote the characteristics of service, scholarship, and leadership. This is a prestigious organization and induction is a high honor.” Afterward, a candle-lighting ceremony was held to demonstrate the characteristics of a National Honors Society member. To conclude, the candidates recited pledge, promising to honor the commitment it takes to become a member of the National Honor Society. They promised to provide service to their school as well as their community and to lead by example.

Light refreshments were served and candidates had a chance to mingle with friends and family. The excitement was obvious throughout the room. Senior Ebony Coleman stated, “ It feels good to be inducted into National Honors Society. It’s an honor and I’m glad that I am inducted.” The ceremony was a great way to celebrate the high achievements these students have reached. Cavett said, “I really enjoyed the ceremony and I will remember it for a long time to come.”

To be inducted into the National Honors Society students must maintain and 4.0 GPA. They must demonstrate leadership and character, and they must perform community service projects to uphold their commitment to service and leadership. Induction into the National Honor Society is a great honor and the work it takes to be inducted really proves what the BMC is all about. Coleman stated “If you want to be in [the National Honors Society] you have to work hard and keep you grades up. In the long run, hard work really does pay off.”
