Katie Yon is one of the new kids on the block at Brashier Middle College Charter High School and with her comes a new twist in English and Journalism classes.  “Mrs. Yon joins our staff from a journalism background,” says Mike Sinclair, Principal at BMC, “Her experience in writing and reporting allows her to apply the English standards to authentic situations.  In addition, our journalism program has grown and received national attention.”  Creating a school newspaper from scratch may seem like a daunting task to some, but Mrs. Yon handled it with ease.  Journalism students learned the essentials of writing in a interactive way that has carried them throughout the year.  Many of Mrs. Yon’s journalism students have received state awards for the articles they wrote for the paper.

English is another one of Mrs. Yon’s passions.  “I really like Katie because she gladly shares her ideas and is open to new ideas,” says Rosemary Abercrombie, English II teacher at BMC.  Throughout the year Mrs. Yon’s English students have engaged in the literature they read.  “My favorite thing we did this year was the Macbeth projects,” says Greg Massullo a Junior at BMC, “doing a video really helped the play come to life.”
