Leigh Ann Wheeler has a truly unique job. Along with teaching probability and statistics and Algebra Two at the high school, she also teaches MAT 140, a college calculus class. Wheeler got her inspiration to be a teacher from a college professor, “She did more than just teach her subject area—she impacted the hearts of her students. I decided then that I wanted to do the same with my life. I wanted to make a difference.” And she has definitely fulfilled that wish. Wheeler has touched the lives of many students. Taylor Kimmel, a MAT 140 student, said, “She explains things very well. She uses her own time to help after class. She helps as much as she can.”Probability and statistics student Ebony Coleman said, “Mrs. Wheeler is a very good teacher, you can really tell she cares about her students.”
Before coming to BMC, Wheeler was teaching math at the Brasheir Campus. “I was already teaching for the college on the Brashier Campus. I was on the committee that included both high school and college math instructors and became familiar with the Charter high school concept. When I was asked to consider changing to high school, I was ready for a change in my career, and it seemed like a natural progression” Wheeler stated. She said that she enjoyed teaching because it fits her personality better. “The biggest difference is that teaching high school allows me to get to know my students better. Teaching high school and engaging with students fits my philosophy of teaching much better.”
Wheeler said she is very proud to be at BMC. “Teaching at BMCCHS is an incredible privilege. We have the best leadership and instructors around! It is an honor to be part of this awesome team!” And BMC is very proud to have her as well.
