Connor and Kara Beverly start cleaning a patient’s used chair at the end of a long day at school. The smell of Clorox wafts up from the box of wipes used to clean the chair. After cleaning all of the blue and gray chairs that were not occupied, they washed their hands and go around to the patients that had not left yet for the day and ask them if they would like anything to eat drink.

Brashier Middle College Charter High Junior Conner Beverly likes volunteering at the East Side Caner Center. “It’s not hard, and you feel good when you do it,” Beverly says.

Beverly volunteers with his sister Kara Beverly, who is a freshman at BMC. They volunteer at the East Side Cancer Center every Friday after school and help out by cleaning the patients’ chairs and taking the patients who are still there in the afternoon a snack, drink, pillow, or a blanket, depending on how they are feeling.

Cancer Patient Sinita Fowler says, “I think it’s wonderful that they (the volunteers) give their time to help the patients.”

The Beverly’s give their time for about two hours helping with whatever needs to be done around the center.

Connor says that he heard about volunteering from a friend one Friday after school and decided to tag along with his friend to the Cancer Center. He said he enjoyed helping the patients out. So that Monday Connor took his sister Kara with him and his friend to the cancer center to volunteer with them, and they have been volunteering at the East Cancer Center and every Friday since.
