Every other school day some Brashier students walk away from the school. This is not because they hate school and are trying to get away. They are heading to their college class (es).
“Most (people) are doing quite well. Most (people) are getting As and Bs,” says Guidance Counselor Vickie McCammon. McCammon says, “I’m pleased with it (the pass rate). I think it’s quite well.”
According to last year’s statistics, out of the 107 students that took college classes, 98% of those students passed. The amount of the school that was enrolled in college classes was 40%. The average GPA in the college classes was a 3.35.
Students say they are doing/did well in college classes this year.
“High school students have lower (grades) probably overall. One reason is college students have good study habits to be successful in college classes,” says McCammon. The reason some students can not take college classes is because the school doesn’t think they are mature enough, they didn’t pass the Compass test, or their GPA isn’t high enough. McCammon says, “Maturity is most critical for success, working independently also.”
According to McCammon, there aren’t many sophomores in college classes this year, but their success rate is comparable. She also says, “We have some sophomores where maturity is an issue.”
McCammon and Mike Sinclair, Principal of Brashier, went to California for a middle college meeting and McCammon thought Brashier looked very good compared to other middle colleges.
As far as enrollment goes for next year, the enrollment has been going up each year, but the school has not tested freshmen yet. McCammon thinks Brashier will have the most total students in college classes next year.
McCammon says, “Students tend to score less on them (college exams) then on tests. Maybe because of all the material or not studying enough.” Some tips McCammon gives to students in college classes are to stay on top of the lessons and keep up with the syllabus. College level teachers expect the students to keep up with material. She also says doing homework and assigned reading are important. Taking good notes, using study groups, and communicating with the teacher are also good ways to manage college work. Things students say they do to keep a passing grade is doing homework in college seminar, having a study group before every test, following the assignments in the book, and studying the book for an hour after class.
“I have to keep up with the homework. That’s the key. If you don’t do homework you will drop faster than a 3 legged dog being hit with a bicycle,” says Sophomore Jessica Collins.
