BMC Students to Attend National Conference
February 23, 2009 • written by Haley Cannady
From April 29th through May 3rd, eight students will experience the trip of a lifetime. Sophmores Relina Byrd, Brooke Ingram, and Paul Smyth, and Juniors Haley Cannady, John Eron, Jessica Forbes, Shamund Peters, and Alex Thomason will be representing the school at the Middle College National Consortium in Denver, Colorado. This is where middle colleges from all over the country will be coming together to help better the environment. The sponsors for the trip are Sandy Brigmon and Geoff Getty. Students were nominated by teachers and staff from school. ”I think it’s really awesome to be chosen as an amabassador to represent the school” Eron said.
Before they go to the conference, the group must first pick a project. The project must be something that they can do to help the environment in thier community as well as in Denver. Brashier students are already forming strong opinions about the environment. “I believe that the human race is too focused on urbanization and is constantly destorying nature for money. Nature was created so that we could survive off of it, but not to completely destroy it for selfish reasons. It was also created for our enjoyment but if our senseless greed continues there will be nothing to cherish,” stated Forbes
The group’s project this year is a trail clean up day. They are planning to get schools and businesses in Greenville County to participate in cleaning up local hiking trails. Getty said, “I hope that the project is successful in the community and arouses environment awareness. I also hope that the students learn from the experience and take back with them leadership skills that become an example for the rest of the student body.”
