Student Ambassadors certainly had their hands full this year! On top of hosting the MCNC Conference in downtown Greenville, their goal was to raise $5,000 to build one well in a third world country. However, they did not meet that goal. They raised $900, which will go to refurbish an existing well. Student Ambassador Advisor Geoff Getty said, “We’re not sure which country we are helping yet, as Water of Life will work where the need is greatest.”
A blurb about the crisis at www.un.org/waterforlifedecade.com states, “Water scarcity already affects every continent. Around 1.2 billion people, or almost one-fifth of the world’s population, live in areas of physical scarcity, and 500 million people are approaching this situation…Water scarcity is among the main problems to be faced by many societies and the World in the XXIst century…Water scarcity is both a natural and a human-made phenomenon. There is enough freshwater on the planet for six billion people but it is distributed unevenly and too much of it is wasted, polluted and unsustainably managed.”
“The conference theme was ‘Our water, our responsibility’. Water in Liberia is greatly needed so we felt it was our responsibility to help,” said Student Ambassador Kyle Quin.
The ambassadors raised the $900 through free dress day passes which were sold for $2 each. “I think it is important to give to causes like this because those who are more fortunate should give to those who don’t have much,” said Senior Carolyn Charping. “I didn’t buy free dress because I have a $300 car payment each month and I have a minimum wage job, but it is still a good cause.” Junior Aaron Medders was saddened to hear that “around 700 million people in 43 countries suffer today from water scarcity” (Water for Life website), but he is glad that Brashier took the time to help others in need.

Does anyone know who to talk to about raising money for a cause? I would like to raise money for To Write Love On Her Arms.
