A Voice to Be Heard

A certain number password is used on the school's phones to access the intercom.

Sitting in the classroom in the mornings, students talk to each other about their plans after school and what classes they have next. All of a sudden, the intercom goes on and an authoritative voice is heard.

At Brashier Middle College, announcements are made every morning by either Assistant Principal Trina Freeman or Principal Mike Sinclair. However, this routine used to be different. In the past few years, students would do the announcements. This privilege allowed students’ voices to be heard throughout their school, but there are currently no students asking to speak.

“I am not aware of a student that is interested in doing morning announcements this year,” Freeman says.

If there are any students that are willing to apply for this job, then there would most likely be tryouts like in previous years.

“For last year’s announcements, we had students audition after school and we typed up a sample morning announcements handout and students got on the microphone and practiced a couple days after school,” Freeman adds.

But to do the announcements, there are responsibilities that must be met.

“Being here on time, making sure you know the code on the phone to get the loudspeaker going, and making sure that you’re getting the message across,” Freeman adds.

To perform the task perfectly, an ideal student is needed.

“I need a student that is reliable, a student who can speak clearly at the right volume, a student that understands that it is not a time to speak personally, and somebody who can just read the announcements and get the information across as quickly as possible,” Freeman adds.
