Brashier Middle College Charter High School Junior Emmannel Houston participated in the 2010 West Side Story at the Fountain Inn Civic Center, South Carolina.

The West Side Story is a modern day story of Romeo and Juliet that takes place in New York City, New York.  The two gangs in the West Side Story are the Sharks and the Jets, the Sharks are a Puerto Rican and the Jets are Caucasian. Houston who took part in the play played as Chino. The girl Chino likes suddenly falls in love with a Shark gang member named Tony.

Sophomore Jessica Collins liked West Side Story because, “It was very captivating and it drew you in.” Collins really enjoyed going because her friend, Houston, was in it. Collin’s favorite part of the play was, “The dream scene, because it was really cool.” Houston’s favorite part was, “When he (Chino) got to shoot Tony, because there was a lot of emotional intensity.

Houston liked performing in West Side Story. “I did it so it would help me become a better performer.” Houston like performing with Action, “Because he was a real funny character and he played the part really well.”

Houston has been in fourteen different shows and over thirty different performances. Houston’s favorite show he has ever been in was Songs for a New World. He liked it because everyone in it had a solo.
